This session focuses on semantic interoperability in materials science and engineering, with an emphasis on the PMD Core Ontology (PMDco) and its practical use within the community.

Block 1 - 9:00 - 12:00pm - Semantic Interoperability & PMDco Basics

09:00 am – 10:00am - Brief Introduction to Ontologies
- Interoperability and its challenges
- Ontologies: formal knowledge representation
- Ontology design principles and best practices
- Overview of reference ontologies (BFO/RO/IAO/OBI)

10:00am – 11:00am - Introduction to PMD & PMDco
- What is PMD?
- Scope and structure of PMDco
- Tools overview:
- Exploring PMDco in Protégé
- GitHub
- ODK
- Understanding PMDco classes and modules
- Application/Domain ontologies based on PMDco
- Development cycle

11:00am – 12:00pm - Q&A and Discussion
- Open questions
- Clarification of concepts
- Preparation for hands-on session (afternoon)

Block 2 - 1.00pm - 3.00pm - Hands-on PMDco Workshop

- Modeling a simple process using PMDco

Prerequisites

  • Basic knowledge of Semantic Web concepts is helpful
  • No prior hands-on experience with PMDco is required
